This is not the same as helper air springs that assist the coil spring suspension. With helper springs, the ride can be rougher due to the added spring force, but that's not an issue with a dedicated air spring. A vehicle's air spring is made up of a rubber sleeve, a metal piston, and a body mount, which are filled with pressurized air. When the suspension articulates, the sleeve rolls over the piston for a smooth and comfortable ride. Like a tire, the sleeve is very resistant to wear and punctures. The sleeve is attached to the piston and body by crimp rings. There are also some air springs with internal bump stops. The body mounts fix the spring to the vehicle, but like coil springs, suspension travel must be limited by either the shock absorber or limit straps.
